It’s that time of year again! October is Crosstober on the Crosstown Trails. Explore a new part of town on our guided walks all month long.
Check out the offerings below and sign up for any event you want to join by clicking on the registration link. A donation of $10 is suggested to support the Crosstown Trails’ modest expenses and generous grants to nonprofits and open space organizations along its route.
Queer LifeSpace Walkathon
Saturday, October 5 | 8:30 a.m.
Nonprofit counseling agency Queer LifeSpace invites you to lace up your hiking boots for a cause. This Hike-a-Thon isn’t just a journey of scenic vistas; it’s a step towards empowerment, healing, and resiliency for LGBTQIA+ youth. Learn more & register

Walk from Sunset Point in Candlestick State Park 7.7 miles to the Tri-Trail Junction (Portola Dr. and Twin Peaks Blvd.). From there, you can decide to bail or continue on one of the three “spokes” from the center of the Crosstown and Double Cross X. Learn more & register

Double Cross from West Portal to Pier 23
Friday, October 11 | 10 a.m.
Start your weekend early with a transit-friendly way to try out two-thirds of the Double Cross Trail. Meet in West Portal and end at Pier 23 after about 9.5 miles to enjoy some nice fall weather, food, and libations. Learn more & register
Creeks, Peaks, and Wild Parrots
Saturday, October 12 | 9 a.m.
Meet at Mission Blue in Visitacion Valley for a 13+ mile walk that combines the Crosstown and Double Cross routes. In between forest paths, canyon climbs, skyline views, and stairways, we’ll visit new street murals, hidden greenways, and lively plazas. Learn more & register

This week you have the opportunity to leisurely walk parts of the Crosstown and Double Cross Trails. If you choose to hit the trail for all six walks, you will complete both the Crosstown and Double Cross Trails. Pick one or multiple. Learn more & register
Connecting Nature on the Crosstown Trails

Explore nature habitats on and off the Trails. We’ll visit Adah’s Stairway and the Green Hairstreak Butterfly Corridor, stewarded by Nature in the City; Mt. Sutro, cared for by Sutro Stewards; and Garden for the Environment. Learn more & register
Crosstown-Double Cross Pub Crawl

Our June pub crawl was such a hit we’re doing it again! Join us as we hit three historic bars along the trails, each over 90 years old: St. Mary’s Pub, Glen Park Station bar, and Philosopher’s Club bar. About 3.5 miles in all. 21+ only. Learn more & register
Double Cross from West Portal to Pier 23
Wednesday, October 30 | 9 a.m.
A transit-friendly way to try out most of the Double Cross, with the Double Cross founders! Meet in West Portal to start our nearly 10 mile walk. End at Pier 23 for a frosty reward. Learn more & register

Kite by the Bay
Sunday, October 27 | 12 to 4 p.m.
Candlestick State Park is hosting a kite festival! Bring your own kite, borrow one of theirs, or decorate one to fly. You can also look forward to food, a DJ, and face painting.
Oxbridge Market Deal
All October
While walking Section 1 of the Crosstown Trail, you’ll notice the Oxbridge Market, at the corner of Cambridge and Silver, a friendly neighborhood market admired for their substantial and delicious sandwiches. To help us celebrate Crosstober, Oxbridge will subtract $2 from your sandwich order, if you let them know you’re walking the Crosstown Trail.
Volunteer with our affiliates
- SF Urban Riders works on the Laguna Honda Community Trail System every second Saturday of the month. Meet at 9 a.m.
- Nature in the City works on the Green Hairstreak Corridor every third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., in addition to other projects at places such as the Alemany Farm.
- Visitacion Valley Greenway holds a monthly fourth Saturday garden project from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Meet at the Community Garden (near 141 Arleta Avenue).
- Glen Park Greenway works on the greenway from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month, except when holidays conflict and push the Work Party to the second Saturday.
